Deadly fire rages on in Hong Kong
FIREFIGHTERS yesterday struggled to contain a deadly blaze at a multi-storey industrial building in Hong Kong’s East Kowloon area, which had been raging for nearly 72 hours, killing two firemen and injuring 12 others.
The second victim, a 37-year-old surnamed Hui, was killed on Thursday evening.
The fire broke out at a self-storage unit in the industrial building on Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were fighting the blaze with nine jets, four turntable ladder monitors, five ground monitors and 38 fire engines.
Fire Services Department director David Lai Man-hin said the biggest challenge facing firefighters was breaking into more than 200 mini-storage cubicles that were engulfed by the fire.
Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said he was saddened to hear of the loss of lives.
