Chinese passenger jet passes its high-speed tests

CHINA’S much-anticipated homegrown passenger jet has completed high-speed taxiing tests, the last step before its maiden flight.
The C919 single-aisle aircraft had its fourth round of high-speed taxiing tests at Pudong International Airport yesterday morning, with the front landing gear lifted slightly for the first time to simulate takeoff.
“The test marks the C919 has finished all the necessary taxiing tests before its maiden flight,” said Wu Guanghui, its chief designer and deputy general manager of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.
The speed and height of the lifted front landing gear were proper and the aircraft was in good condition, a COMAC official announced after the test. “Both the jet and pilot performed well.”
The jet has acquired all the required certificates and passed its final expert assessment last week. It was given the go-ahead to make its maiden flight after high-speed taxiing tests.
The tests were conducted at speeds of 230 to 260 kilometers per hour, approaching the speed required for takeoff.
The narrow-body C919, with 168 seats and a range of 5,000 kilometers, will compete with the updated Airbus A320 and Boeing’s new-generation 737, which currently dominate the market.
Operations at the Pudong airport were affected for a time to allow the tests to be carried out. The air traffic regulator said the airport’s takeoff and landing capacity had decreased by 70 percent between 8:30 and 11am because of the tests.
A total of 18 flights, most of which were on domestic routes, were canceled and about 10 delayed.
COMAC had plans to begin the development of a wide-bodied aircraft this year.
