CAAC clear up passport ID confusion

CHINA'S civil aviation authority yesterday clarified Chinese passports can be used to take domestic flights, after some airports claimed that identity cards are necessary for domestic flights.
The public security bureau, under the Civil Aviation Administration of China, said Chinese passengers can use their passports to buy flight tickets, check in and pass security procedures for domestic flights.
The bureau said that passengers must use the same ID certificates when they purchase tickets, check in and go through security checks.
Early this month, airports in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, in the southern province of Guangdong, stipulated mainland passengers must show their ID cards to receive security checks when taking domestic flights.
Some other domestic airports also followed the practice.
They claimed it was according to the new Civil Aviation Security Check Regulation issued by the CAAC and enforced from January 1, 2017.
Some passport holders had to apply for temporary ID cards from airports’ police authorities to go through security checks.
The bureau said that valid ID certificates for mainland passengers include ID cards, temporary ID cards, passports and certificates of military officials and sailors. Travel permits for residents from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are also valid.
Foreign travellers can still use passports, certificates for diplomats, permanent residential permits in China and other certificates approved by the CAAC to take flights.
