Alert over as Typhoon Roke weakens

HONG Kong lowered a typhoon alert last night as Typhoon Roke weakened, with airport and transport authorities rushing to restore normal operations in the Asian financial hub.

The Hong Kong Observatory had raised its typhoon alert to 8 yesterday morning — close to the top rating of 10 — with Roke expected to make landfall over the eastern part of the city.

A reading of 8 would have meant the closure of businesses, government offices, schools, banks, port operations and the Hong Kong stock exchange. However, the alert had been lowered to 1 by evening.

Roke is estimated to be moving at about 20 kilometers per hour across inland Guangdong Province and continuing to weaken.

Guangdong, which borders Hong Kong, had issued a level 3 alert on Saturday.

Yesterday, a cargo ship with 12 people aboard capsized in waters off its coast. All 12 were rescued safely.

A total of 40,473 fishing boats returned to port while 13,530 people working at fish farms returned to shore.

Shenzhen has been hit by strong winds and heavy rain, and the local government ordered construction sites to suspend work yesterday.

In Hong Kong, a spokesman for the airport said about half a dozen flights were canceled and more than 300 delayed.

Local trains were operating normally, but some bus and ferry services had been canceled earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, the National Meteorological Center renewed a blue alert, the lowest level, for Typhoon Sonca, which is expected to hit south China’s Hainan Province or the Beibu Gulf this evening or tomorrow morning.
