8 hurt as Chinese flight hits turbulence

FIVE passengers and three flight attendants were injured when China Eastern Airlines flight MU777 hit severe turbulence on its approach to Sydney yesterday, the carrier said.
The Airbus 330-200, which had left Kunming, capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, at 1:16am, landed safely at 2:07pm.
The Shanghai-based airline said in a statement that the injured were treated in hospital but did not reveal the nature of their injuries.
It said there was “sudden turbulence in a clear sky” when the aircraft was flying at an altitude of 6 kilometers, causing the passengers and attendants to “feel sick.”
Kathy Zhang, the airline’s general manager for Oceania, said: “The safety of our passengers is our primary concern and we have confirmed that all the affected passengers are in a stable condition, having received treatment for their injuries.”
The airline said it was in the process of contacting the families of those injured.
A spokesman for Australia’s Transport Safety Bureau told Xinhua news agency that the incident was being investigated but that there were no restrictions that would prevent the aircraft or its crew returning to China.
“If anything abnormal, we will do a further detailed investigation,” he said.
China Eastern said it would cooperate with the investigation.
