TOTALLY 15, from companies and agencies in Shanghai and Suzhou, have been arrested on suspicion of involvements in the sensational Taihu Lake dumping case exposed in early July, which has caused pollution damages from wastes including toxic substances.

Five suspects allegedly involved in an illegal wastes dumping case at Taihu Lake, Jiangsu Province, in early July have been arrested by procuratorates in Jiangsu for causing environmental damage and dereliction of duty, China's Supreme People's Procuratorate said on its website today.

Eight vessels carrying tons of garbage from Shanghai were seized by the Wuzhong District government with vessel owners controlled on July 1 when these vessels were allegedly dumping the garbage on an abandoned embankment at a drug rehabilitation center in Taihu, according to the procuratorate.

The garbage was from city's Jiading and Changning districts and most was construction wastes, with small amount of domestic garbage also included.

It was transported by Jinlu Construction and Engineering Co in Kunshan City, which is administered by Suzhou city, and the company has been found to have dumped 23,336 tons of garbage at the same spot since mid-June, according to the procuratorate.

The domestic garbage illegally dumped contained toxic substances, causing serious pollution for the ecological environment, the procuratorate said.

So far, all wastes have been cleared, it said.

Two legal representatives of Jinlu were arrested and probe showed they had not contacted the drug rehabilitation center's management about the dumping operations, the procuratorate said.

Another suspect was arrested for allegedly fabricating a landfill project of the drug rehabilitation center and swindled 250,000 yuan (US$38,461) as project deposit from the two representatives, according to the procuratorate.

The suspect was allegedly involved in fraud, it said.

The deputy director of the Taihu Lake Drug Rehabilitation Center and the director of the center’s construction department surnamed Zhang have also been arrested for allegedly allowing garbage dumping, which is banned at the center.

In addition, Zhang allegedly took bribe totaling 40,000 yuan during his term in 2014 and 2015, according to the procuratorate.

Besides, four people of six Shanghai wharfs have also been detained by Suzhou police for causing environment damage, and another six people of these wharfs have been released on bail pending trial , the procuratorate said.
