Shanghai delegation visits Chile, led by mayor
上海市政府代表团访智利 杨雄会见智利总统和圣地亚哥首都大区主席

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong led an official delegation to Chile this week and met Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and Santiago Metropolitan Region Governor Claudio Orrego on August 21 and 22.

Yang and Orrego also signed an agreement for friendly cooperation between Shanghai and Santiago in the next three years.

The mayor told the president that Shanghai not only has exchanges with its Chilean sister city Valparaíso but also has cooperation with Santiago. Shanghai wants to expand ties with regional governments in Chile.

He briefed the Chilean president on the development of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and its achievements in reform and opening. He said Chile is the first country in South America to set up a national pavilion in the zone. More than 50 Chilean companies are now operating there. More and more Chilean products are entering the China market.

Yang welcomed more Chilean businesses to come to Shanghai and encouraged more Chinese enterprises to invest in Chile. He said Shanghai is striving to become a global innovation center. This will provide a lot of opportunities for cooperation between the two sides in trade, economy, science and technology, culture and tourism.

Bachelet said China is the biggest trade partner of Chile and Shanghai is the key portal for Chile to enter the Chinese market and even the Asian market. Chile puts its economic and trade cooperation with Shanghai as a top priority and encourages Chilean companies to use the pilot zone to enter the Chinese market.

The president said Chile and Shanghai enjoyed frequent exchanges in recent years and they should expand cooperation in areas of tourism, culture and arts.

In his meeting with Orrego, Yang said Shanghai and Santiago Metropolitan Region began their friendly cooperation in 2008. The two sides renewed their cooperation agreement in 2011, covering trade, urban planning, environmental protection, education, tourism and heritage preservation.

He noted that Shanghai and Santiago face the same problems and challenges in urban development. The two cities can learn from each other in environment protection, traffic management, and smart city construction. He invited Orrego to attend the 9th Global Conference on Health Promotion in Shanghai in November.

Orrego said he is happy to renew the cooperation agreement and hopes the two cities can cooperate fruitfully in urban planning, public transport, and smart city construction for economic sustainability and higher living standards.

Chinese Ambassador to Chile Li Baorong accompanied the Shanghai government delegation on the visit.
