Mayor meets Fijian PM and delegation

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Fiji government delegation led by Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama on Monday. Yang said the two countries are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic relationship this year. High-level visits by their leaders further strengthened the bilateral ties.

Yang said Fiji’s participation in the World Expo 2010 Shanghai was successful and it helped to promote mutual understanding between the two peoples. Shanghai is keen to play a big role in Sino-Fiji cooperation. The city government will encourage local enterprises to invest in Fiji and local Chinese to go to Fiji for holidays.

The mayor said Shanghai wants to share its urban planning and construction experiences with Fiji and he believed that Fiji will continue to develop under the leadership of Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama.

Bainimarama congratulated Shanghai on its economic and social achievements. He said Fiji views China as its best friend and wants to expand exchanges and cooperation with China and Shanghai.

Fiji has a consulate general in Shanghai which will serve as a channel for exchanges and cooperation between the two sides.

Fijian Ambassador to China Commodore Esala Teleni and Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Zhang Ping were present at the meeting.
