SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng met with UK First Secretary of State and Finance Minister George Osborne and his delegation on Tuesday.

He said China is deepening reforms and pushing for more opening to address problems in its course of development. Shanghai is accelerating its transformation into an international financial center and is testing a host of reform policies in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone.

Han said Shanghai and the City of London have worked closely and fruitfully in the area of finance and had frequent discussions about future development and cooperation.

Many British firms developed well in Shanghai and participated in the city’s effort to become an international financial center. There is more understanding between British companies and their Chinese partners, he added.

Han said he believed Osborne’s visit will help Britain understand more about China and Shanghai and strengthen the cooperation between Shanghai and the City of London.

Osborne said he was visiting China in the hope of conveying Britain’s intention to become China’s best partner in the West.

“China is shifting from an investment-driven economy to an innovation- and consumption-driven economy. The change is important for China and for the world as well. Britain gives its firm support to China’s ongoing reform,” he said.

The minister said Shanghai is the economic center of China and the key player to promote the RMB internationalization. Britain wants to cooperate more with Shanghai, participate more in the construction of Shanghai Free Trade Zone, and contribute more to Shanghai’s effort to become an international financial center.

Shanghai Executive Vice Mayor Tu Guangshao also joined the meeting.
