Han Zheng meets Boehringer Ingelheim chairman

SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng yesterday met Andreas Barner, chairman of the Board of Managing Directors of Boehringer Ingelheim, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies based in Germany.

Han said Shanghai is striving to become a global innovation center and is accelerating the process. Public investment in R&D projects will represent 3.6 percent of the city’s GDP this year. The municipal government encourages investment by foreign companies.

He said that 2015 is an important year as the Shanghai government will draft its 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020). Pharmaceutical industry is a key area for development.

The Party chief welcomed companies at home and abroad to participate in the city’s innovation drive and pledged to improve business environment for them.

Barner said he was impressed by the Shanghai government’s great emphasis on innovation and support for R&D projects. He and his colleagues are keen to contribute to the city’s innovation drive.

Barner said he felt encouraged that Shanghai made biomedicine a key industry for development. His company is building a pharmaceutical production base in Pudong with a planned investment of 180 million euro (US$ 203 million). The facility will introduce advanced German technology to Shanghai and other parts of China.
