Work starts on Hongqiao tunnel

DIGGING started on a tunnel in Hongqiao over the weekend to relieve the traffic pressure around the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai).

The 2.8-kilometer-long Zhuguang Road Tunnel, with four vehicles lanes in both directions, will connect the Beiqing Expressway in Minhang District and the Songze Elevated highway in Qingpu District.

Upon its completion in 2019, the tunnel will become a major traffic channel for the center and west Hongqiao area, said Li Zhanglin, the project manager who is employed by Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co.

The tunnel is also expected to relieve traffic congestion affecting Yan’an Road Elevated Highway, which currently handles most vehicles to and from the world’s largest single-building exhibition complex as well as Hongqiao Business Zone, Li said.

The tunnel is being dug along Zhuguang and Jinfeng roads and will cross a river, a large residential area and an international school.

A cutting-edge shield, which can reduce vibration and noise, is being used to dig the tunnel. Some 90 percent of the tunnel structures are prefabricated and will be assembled on site to reduce flying dust and noise, Li said.

The construction site for the tunnel has been awarded the city’s most environmentally friendly site by Shanghai Construction Trade Association, which inspected more than 1,000 sites.

The site will become a model for other construction companies, said Xu Zheng, the trade association’s director.
