Woman found dead in elevator with injuries

A WOMAN was found dead in an elevator with head injuries at a residential building in Pudong early yesterday.

The 56-year-old victim, surnamed Wang, lived on the fourth floor of the building on Huanlin Road E. in Pudong. Wang was coming down to meet a couple, identified as Chen and his wife, who were waiting for her at the building’s entrance on Sunday night.

Chen told xinmin.cn that after waiting for a while they tried to call Wang on her cellphone but could not reach her. They walked up the steps when they noticed a gap on the outer elevator door on the fourth floor. Peeping through that gap, Chen saw the elevator stuck on the floors above.

The couple walked up to the sixth floor and forced open the outer doors. They saw Wang lying in the elevator which was stuck between the fifth and sixth floor.

Chen said that it looked like Wang had hurt her head badly as there was blood on the elevator. They called the medical emergency who declared Wang dead on the scene.

The safety and quality supervision authority are cooperating with the police in the investigation. The elevator was produced by Shanghai Chongyou Elevator Co and has nine other elevators in the neighborhood.

Shanghai Yuanfan Elevator Engineering Co is responsible for the elevator’s maintenance. A certificate posted on the elevator said the next inspection was due on December, 2015.

A resident, surnamed Qiu, who lives on the seventh floor of the building told xinmin.cn that she had noticed some problems with the elevator at around 7pm on Sunday.

She said she pressed the first floor button but the elevator stopped on the second floor, and then went up to the 14th floor. She said she was stuck in the elevator for over 10 minutes. Other residents also complained of similar problems. They called the maintenance company several times, but new problems kept cropping up.
