Woman escapes jail despite Metro assault

A WOMAN who refused to allow subway security guards to scan her bag then assaulted two police officers in the ensuing altercation was yesterday given a five-month detention with a six-month reprieve.

The woman, surnamed Tang, was sentenced after being found guilty of disrupting the public order, the Shanghai Railway Transport Court ruled.

On May 10, Yang was asked by a security guard at Huinan Station on Metro line 16 to pass her backpack through the X-ray machine. She refused and pushed past him.

When a police officer intervened and told her to go through the check, Tang became agitated and lashed out, slapping and kicking him, the court heard.

She also kicked a female police officer who came to the aid of her colleague and threw her radio to the ground. The struggle went on for nearly 10 minutes before Tang was taken to a police station.

In court, Tang said she became angry when the officer grabbed her bag and insisted she go through the security check as she was carrying nothing illegal.

However, she said she did not mean to assault the police officers, and had simply lashed out after being manhandled.

In court, Tang said she regretted her actions and acknowledged she had made a mistake.

The railway court said that since March it has handled 12 cases involving public order offenses on the Metro network.

In May, police resorted to the use of tear gas to control a man in his 20s who became violent after refusing requests to pass through a security check. He was later sentenced to five months’ detention for assaulting a police officer.

The court said yesterday that security checks on the Metro are compulsory, and that anyone who refuses to comply runs the risk of being charged with a criminal offense.

Since the start of the year, subway security staff have confiscated 3,400 knives, 160 replica guns, 42,000 firecrackers and about 700 liters of flammable liquids from subway passengers. More than 50 people linked to the incidents have been detained.
