Wetland park a centerpiece for 10km run

YANGPU District yesterday invited residents and expatriates to take part next month in a 10-kilometer running event at the only natural wetland in downtown Shanghai.

Some 3,500 participants can apply to join the event to be held on October 16 at the Xinjiangwan international community, which is marked by a 12,000-square-meter wetland park at the northeast corner of the city.

Application forms are available on www.yangpurunning.com.

Of the many similar public running events across the city, the event in Yangpu boasted the best ecological environment along its route, which has a green coverage for more than half the distance, said Gui Jinsong, the head of the district’s sport authority.

The run will start from the Springs Center on 99 Jiangwancheng Road and will pass through the Jiangwan campus of Fudan University, the community cultural center as well as the park. Participants can enjoy the natural scenery of the wetland.

The wetland region was formed because it was sited by a big turn of the Huangpu River. The wetland park is now open to the public after years of restricted access.
