Wedding planner loses appeal in hairstyle row

THE mohawk may be a favorite hairstyle of football stars but the mother of a would-be bride ditched a wedding planning company after she found the master of ceremonies hosting a similar cut.
The company approached the Hongkou District People’s Court, seeking compensation, but the court ruled against it yesterday.
The bride, who attended a friend’s wedding ceremony in October, 2013, was so taken in by the MC’s hairstyle that she approached his company to officiate her own wedding ceremony, planned for October, 2014.
The bride, whose name was not revealed by the court, signed an agreement with the wedding planning company and worked on all details like decorations, flowers, filming and photographing, hosting and makeup.
The deal stipulated that the bride would pay the company a total of 18,000 yuan (US$2880) for the entire event for which she paid an advance of 2,000 yuan.
But things didn’t work out as planned once the bride’s mother got into the picture. In September last year, when the mother accompanied her daughter to discuss the arrangements with the company and the master of ceremonies, she threw a fit.
His unusual hairstyle didn’t quite appeal to her and she thought it inappropriate for a traditional Chinese ceremony. She called the company and demanded the host to change his hairstyle.
After her request was turned down, she canceled the contract just one month before the wedding date.
The company demanded the family pay up the remaining 16,000 yuan, but the mother argued that the 2,000-yuan advance was good enough compensation. Not impressed, the company filed a suit against the family.
But while the court did not pass any judgement on what was an acceptable hairstyle for ceremonies, it rejected the suit on technical grounds, saying that the contract did not specify any penalties over defaults.
It told the company that the advance money paid should be taken as compensation even as the company argued that it suffered financial losses as it had made arrangements for the wedding ceremony by placing orders for workers, flowers, etc.
The court said the company should take this as a learning lesson and prepare for future risks by having penalties written into the contracts.
Mohawk is also referred to as a mohican or punk hairstyle in which the head is shaved at the sides and the remaining strip of hair is worn stiffly erect — sometimes brightly colored.
