Watchdog reconsidering Oppo lawsuit

THE Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission said yesterday that it will consider withdrawing its legal action against Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo if the company can demonstrate it is now easy for customers to uninstall unwanted apps from their handsets.

The authority filed a lawsuit against the firm, which is based in south China’s Guangdong Province, in July after concluding an investigation that found buyers of the Oppo X9007 model were unable to remove “factory-fitted” programs.

The commission also accused some of the apps installed on the Oppo phone — and on the Samsung N9008S model — of “stealing” users’ data.

The watchdog filed a similar suit against Samsung, but later dropped it when the South Korean company agreed to amend its practices.

Oppo said yesterday that it is now possible for owners of its X9007 model to delete unwanted apps and that instructions on how to do so are provided on its website.

The commission said it will continue to monitor the situation before deciding whether or not to rescind the lawsuit.
