Traffic crusade is just the ticket for putting brakes on offenders

THREE months into the city’s traffic enforcement campaign, the number of motor vehicle violations committed at the busy intersection of Wanhangdu Road and Xinzha Road in Jing’an District has fallen by over 80 percent.

The same progress has been observed at many other intersections across the city, which can be attributed to a combination of the growing public awareness of traffic regulations and the increasing vigilance of the police officers enforcing them.

Tang Lihong, 57, is one of those officers.

“When I started out, the rush hours in Shanghai lasted only half an hour, but now it’s at least three hours, so we have to be mentally prepared for the physical challenges,” said Tang, who has been a traffic officer for 14 years. “The more you allow yourself to feel tired, the less motivated you are to do the job.”

Tang, who was an office worker at a state-owned company before becoming a policeman, said keeping fit helps him to endure the rigours of policing the city’s motorists. For the past 12 years he has been running marathons annually.

“It’s a good exercise for both the feet and the mind,” he said.

Shan Zhijiao, a young colleague of Tang’s, said learning the art of talking to people, especially difficult ones, should also be a high priority for officers, as well as maintaining a positive attitude.

“As traffic police officers, we often feel a bit depressed after a day’s work because of our failure to persuade people to obey the law,” he said. “It takes both personality and experience to be a confident and upbeat police officer.”

The officers said they are pleased that people are becoming more law abiding and respectful of officers.

“My job has been made a lot easier, and sometimes when I stop an offender, onlookers will lecture him before I even open my mouth,” Tang said.
