Tracking system set for testing

A NEW system that tracks crowds via their mobile phones will be put to the test next month in subway stations, a senior city official said yesterday.
Shao Zhiqing, vice director of the Shanghai Municipal Economy and Information Technology Development Commission, said the country’s leading telecommunications companies — China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom — will work with a fourth, unnamed, company to develop the monitoring system.
It will be used to control crowds on the city’s Metro system, he said.
“The system will be able to track the number of people within a given area, as long as they have a phone,” Shao said, adding that “new technologies can help prevent accidents.”
Once the system is working, people will be sent a short text message alerting them to whatever the potential danger might be, Shao said.
He said the three telecoms firms are working out how to identify people carrying more than one phone.
