Tougher crackdown results in fewer criminal cases: police

SHANGHAI police said on Sunday that their effort of cracking down on theft, robbery and fraud has paid off as the number of such cases from November 25 last year till now was down 15 percent from the same period in the previous year, while 4 percent more suspects were netted.

Police in downtown districts said they have deployed more plainclothes officers around shopping centers such as Xujiahui and the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall to watch out for pickpockets.

In Hongkou District, police said they have caught 25 pickpockets around Qipu Road shopping malls, the Cloud Nine Mall and Sichuan Road N. since the beginning of this year, with the number of cases reported dropping 90 percent.

Meanwhile, in Yangpu District, police said they flew to southwestern China’s Chongqing city for a woman burglar who had allegedly stolen 30,000 yuan (US$4,370) from a few highrise apartments in December.

In suburban Qingpu District, two suspects have been held up for allegedly defrauding five people 150,000 yuan by promising to reward them with a new energy car worth 170,000 yuan for the money they spent on expensive tea.

The city’s Telecommunications and Online Fraud Squad at the Public Security Bureau said it managed to freeze suspicious transactions of 433,000 yuan in 20 accounts between January 1 and 15 after getting reports from the victims. During the period it also blocked 714 suspicious phone numbers and 59 fraud websites, and through timely phone calls and SMS messages prevented over 10,000 people from falling prey.
