Suspect on the run for 15 years caught in city

A SUSPECT who was on the run for 15 years after stabbing a man to death in Chengdu was caught at a Shanghai Metro station during a routine identity check.

The Sichuan Province native, surnamed Yuan, was forced to reveal his true identity when he was stopped by police at People’s Square Station on Metro Line 2 on Monday.

Police stopped Yuan when he looked nervous at the sight of the officers. He claimed he had just arrived by train from Sichuan Province and had left his identity card at home.

After checking the train ticket, police found Yuan had bought the ticket using another person’s identity card. They took him to the police station for further questioning.

Yuan then admitted he had been avoiding the law for 15 years after killing a man in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan. He said he was only 22 years old then. He said he got into a quarrel, which turned violent, and fatally stabbed a man in the chest with a knife.

Local police said they will hand him over to Sichuan police.

Yuan claimed he survived by taking up part-time jobs and never went back to his home for 15 years.
