Student hurt in lab blast at university
A student was injured in a blast at a Fudan University chemistry laboratory on Monday night.
A canister of nitric acid exploded around 7pm at a chemistry department building. It triggered the smoke alarm in the lab. Some students reported hearing a minor explosion.
The student, who was carrying out an experiment at the lab, had suffered injuries to his left hand, right arm and shoulder, according to Changhai Hospital where he was treated. His condition was not life-threatening, said the university.
The cause of the blast is under investigation. The university has reminded teachers and students of the need to be aware of lab safety.
Last September, three postgraduate students suffered eye and face injuries during a blast in a lab at the College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at Donghua University.
A postgraduate researcher at Tsinghua University died in an explosion during a chemical experiment in December 2015.
