Salmon prices on local market will stay high due to strong demand

Salmon prices will remain high this year as global production cannot keep up with increasing demand, Sigmund Bjorgo, director of the Norwegian Seafood Council China and Hong Kong, said today in Shanghai.
"Salmon is a global product and the supply is limited," Bjorgo said at Fudan University's Norway Day.
He said global salmon production will increase up to 4 percent this year while demand will rise as much as 10 percent.
In the past three to four years, the annual consumption of fresh salmon has been growing at about 30 percent in China, Bjorgo said.
He added that Shanghai is by far the biggest salmon market on the Chinese mainland. He said about 75 percent of Shanghainese have said they had eaten salmon in the past year while half had eaten the fish in the past month.
Shanghai consumes about 100 to 150 tons of salmon a week, while Hong Kong consumes roughly 200 tons weekly, Bjorgo said.
