Street cleaner killed by ‘drunk driver’

A MAN was detained by police in Baoshan District yesterday for allegedly knocking down and killing a street cleaner while driving drunk.

The suspect, surnamed Yao, is alleged to have crashed his Audi car into an electric vehicle being driven by 44-year-old sanitation worker Xu Yifeng along Sanquan Road, near Changjiang Road W., at 4:25am.

After hitting Xu, Yao, a 29-year-old from east China’s Jiangsu Province, drove into five parked cars, all of which were unoccupied, police said.

An ambulance team was called but Xu was pronounced dead at the scene.

An unnamed witness was quoted as saying that Yao was driving at high speed prior to hitting the sanitation worker’s vehicle and that Xu was thrown about 20 meters due to the force of the impact.

According to police, Yao — who was arrested at the scene — said he had been drinking beer with friends at an entertainment center until about 4am.

When he was unable to find anyone to drive him home, Yao decided to take the wheel himself, as his home was “only a kilometer away, and I didn’t think there would be many cars on road at that hour,” police quoted him as saying.

Xu, who was married with two children, had worked for Zhangmiao Sanitary Service Co for the past three years, his employer said.
