Seniors’ center alleviates shortage

A daycare center for seniors with physical disabilities and dementia was opened in the Caojiadu area in Jing’an District yesterday to help alleviate the acute shortage of senior care facilities.
The center, a former seniors activity center run by the Caojiadu neighborhood committee, was renovated to accommodate seniors with physical disabilities and dementia and has the capacity to take in about 50 people.
It is among the city’s first daycare centers for seniors with physical disabilities and dementia.
As the city’s population ages, space in public senior care homes has become very scarce.
“The situation is more acute for elderly people with dementia or physical disabilities who require more care, but many facilities won't accept them due to cost concerns and a shortage of staff,” said Lu Jicheng, an employee of Shanghai Yijia Elderly Development Center, a senior care service provider that operates the center.
The space is provided for free by the Caojiadu neighborhood committee, and the district’s health and family planning commission will help provide medical care resources.
It is estimated that for every 12 seniors living with dementia in Shanghai there is only one bed available.
