See you later Chinese alligator
CHINESE alligators can now be seen at Dongtan Wetland Park in Chongming District through to October as the critically endangered species end months of hibernation.
“The hibernation period of Chinese alligators is November to March, and alligators have crawled out of their holes,” said Wang Jiangtao who works at the park’s scientific research department.
Night tours to observe the alligators would be held during this summer, the park said.
The park has more than 20 Chinese alligators after 13 years of efforts to expand the population.
Dongtan wetland is the venue of a habitat modification program to recover the population. As the largest natural river wetland in the Yangtze River basin, its environment is suitable for the growth and reproduction of the species. It can accommodate more than 300 Chinese alligators.
