Puxi’s Magnolia casts tall shadow

CONSTRUCTION was completed yesterday on the tallest building in Puxi.
With the appearance of a magnolia flower, it is set to become an iconic landmark in the North Bund area in Hongkou District.
The 320-meter-high building in the complex, named Magnolia Square on Changzhi Road E. will open in June, said its builder, Shanghai Construction Group.
The building is the fourth tallest in Shanghai after the 632-meter Shanghai Tower, 492-meter Shanghai World Financial Center and 420.5-meter Jinmao Tower in Pudong’s Lujiazui area.
The new building surpasses the 250-meter Shimao International Plaza to become Puxi’s tallest construction. However, its reign will be short.
Construction is under way on two skyscrapers in Puxi that will surpass the Magnolia tower.
They are the 330-meter “New Shanghai Center” in Putuo District and the 340-meter “Xujiahui Center” in Xuhui District.
The 420,000-square-meter Magnolia Square complex includes the 66-story main tower, a nearby 39-story 172-meter-tall hotel building and a 47-meter-tall annex to serve as exhibition halls and commercial facilities. A helipad was built on top of the tower building.
“Many of the world’s top 500 enterprises have rented offices in the tower building. They are mainly shipping, financial and fashion design industries,” said Cai Wenlu, general project manager for the square.
The hotel building, which will be operated by the Starwood hotels, will open in June along with the main tower, she added. Other commercial facilities, including the city’s largest IMAX cinema, would open in 2018.
The annex will be connected with the International Cruise Terminal station on Metro Line 12.
Construction on the project started in 2009 and had involved many challenges, Cai said.
The square was sited beside Line 12 and close to Xinjian Road Cross River Tunnel as well as a substation, old residential neighborhoods and some protected historic buildings, she added.
The North Bund area is being transformed into a financial and shipping center. Office buildings, restaurants and malls have been planned for the area, which lies opposite from the Lujiazui financial center.
The district plans to build a continuous pedestrian path along the North Bund with several green skywalks and underground tunnels to connect it with Metro stations.
The sightseeing path, which will open to joggers and cyclists, will run for 3.2 kilometers along Huangpu River from the North Bund area to Sichuan Road N.
Near the newly built Magnolia Square, the district government also plans to convert some historic residential buildings along Zhoushan Road into innovative stores. Jewish refugees lived in this road during World War II.
Most tourist attractions in Hongkou are situated in the area.
These include the ancient Xiahai Temple, Moishe Synagogue, which is inside the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, and the Shanghai Port International Passenger Center for cruise liners.
