Pudong riverbank area is to be transformed
PEOPLE will be able to walk along the bank of Huangpu River in Pudong from Yangpu Bridge to Xupu Bridge, via the Lujiazui financial hub and former World Expo site, by the end of next year, the city’s top planning body said yesterday.
New parks, public squares and art galleries have been planned along the 21.5 kilometer-long riverside area in Pudong to demonstrate the city’s transformation and development, said the Shanghai Planning, Land and Resources Administration, which is also soliciting public opinion on the plans.
“The area along the river covering 3.4 square kilometers will display the city’s culture and history, offer public spaces for residents as well as allow tourists from both home and aboard to experience the city’s lifestyle,” the administration said.
There will be facilities for joggers and people doing exercises. Historic buildings, such as a former shipyard and a coal plant will be preserved. Sculptures and art galleries are to be built along the path with parks and gardens, according to the plan.
Currently the riverbank is dominated by docks, commercial buildings, restaurants and construction sites. Only half of the area is accessible to the public. Pudong government is demolishing structures blocking access to open a continuous path to the public by the end of next year.
A 4.2-km section between the Yangpu Bridge and Pudong Road S. will mainly serve as residential area. The Minsheng Wharf near Minsheng Road is to be converted into an exhibition space. A former shipyard will be preserved and become a water museum, the administration said. An ecological corridor will be built along the river near the Lujiazui area to attract residents and tourists to the riverbank.
A former coal warehouse near the Bailianjing River will be turned into a major modern art gallery. Surrounding areas will provide places for artists to display sculptures and exhibitions, according to the plan. A 4.6-km-long section between Chuanyang River and Xupu Bridge will become an area for people to exercise or just to relax.
Some 20 lighthouses will be built along the bank. They will both illuminate the path and offer services, such as cafes or a visitor center.
People can send their suggestions on the plan by guiweiban@sina.com up to October 5. The blueprint will be publicized along the riverside areas as well as on the official website of the administration until October 1.
