Port operator plans wind power system

SHANGHAI Port, the world’s largest by throughput, plans to install a wind-generating power system to supplement its energy supplies.

The system, which will be in addition to other power sources, will cut the port’s carbon emissions, Fang Huaijin, Vice President of the Shanghai International Port Group Co, said yesterday on the sidelines of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

The port group will focus on research and development and “ideally we would be able to start implementing the project during the first half of 2018,” he said.

Fang did not say when the project would begin generating power.

The project is in line with the central government’s calls for “smart” and “green” ports as part of its Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) on sustainable energy development.

The Yangshan Deepwater Port will be the first facility in the country to trial being powered by wind from the ocean, he said.
