Police chief: 6 being held over Husi scandal

THE city police chief said yesterday that six executives of Shanghai Husi Food Co have been detained over the food safety scandal that has hit famous fast-food chains.
Previously, it had been reported that five executives of Shanghai Husi had been held — including the company’s head and quality manager.
No information was given on the identity of the sixth person.
Speaking on local radio, police chief and vice mayor Bai Shaokang said the six executives of Shanghai Husi, a unit of US-based OSI Group LLC, had been taken into custody.
And Shanghai police had started their investigation into claims that Shanghai Husi falsified production dates, he added.
“If any wrongdoing was unearthed, we would deal with it strictly according to law,” Bai said. “Food safety has a direct bearing on the interests and safety of every household.”
The firm had supplied meat to foreign fast food chains McDonald’s and KFC-parent Yum Brands Inc, among many others.
The scandal, which also dragged in coffee chain Starbucks Corp, was triggered by a local television report showing staff at Shanghai Husi using long-expired meat.
The report also alleged the firm forged production dates.
In his interview, Bai said generally, food and drug authorities first investigate such cases, transferring them to police if there is a criminal element.
But this time, police and the food and drug authorities worked together from the start, ensuring the investigation proceeded efficiently, said Bai.
Local regulators closed the Shanghai Husi plant on July 20.
