Police act over zebra crossings

TRUCKS and hired buses that don’t give way to pedestrians on zebra crossings are being targeted by Shanghai traffic police.
As a reminder to pedestrians and bike riders to take heed of trucks that often cause accidents when turning because of their large size, some busy crossroads have had warnings of the danger painted on the roads. Signposts at the crossroads carry the same message.
Two crossroads in the Waigaoqiao area — Gangcheng Road and Hangjin Road at Pudong Road N. — already display the warnings, and police said other Pudong crossroads will carry them too.
In Yangpu District, traffic police said they were encouraging hire-bus companies to make their drivers more aware of pedestrians using zebra crossings.
Hengfeng, a company on Fuxing Island that rents out buses, said it penalizes its drivers if they receive traffic offenses.
Yan Yuandong, who drives a Hengfeng shuttle bus, said “even if drivers behind me blare their horns when I stop for pedestrians before zebra crossings, I will do it with a clear conscience.”
Meanwhile, vehicles belonging to trucking firms based in Pudong are having devices installed that will sound a warning when a driver is taking a right turn, police said yesterday.
Shanghai traffic police also announced yesterday that users of their “Shanghai Jiaojing” application can now pay fines for traffic offenses via the app as long as any demerits involved don’t exceed the maximum 12 allowed.
