Phone deadline brought forward

SHANGHAI Communications Administration has brought forward a deadline that threatens to disconnect phones.

The administration urged local phone users to register their real names with telecom service providers, warning those who fail to do so by the end of the year will have their service terminated.

The deadline was brought forward by six months as the country strengthened its crackdown on telecom fraud.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology asked all telecom companies last May to ensure that at least 95 percent of their users registered using accurate information by the end of this year, with 100 percent doing so before June 30, 2017.

The ministry said the decision was made to enforce anti-terrorism legislation and to protect Internet security.

But the ministry and another five government departments — the supreme court, the supreme procuratorate, the Ministry of Public Security, the People’s Bank of China and China Banking Regulatory Commission — issued a new notice on September 23,.

This asked all telecom companies to have 100 percent of their service users registered under their actual names in a bid to prevent telecom fraud.

The public has been calling for measures against telecom companies because perpetrators of online scams cannot be easily traced due to the use of false names or not having registered any names.

Chinese telecom users should take their SIM cards and ID cards to register at telecom company branches, while foreigners should bring their passports along with their SIM cards.

Users can call their telecom companies to check if their cards have been properly registered or to find out how they should register.

The new regulations state all new users will get new SIM cards only after service providers verify their identities via ID cards or passports.
