Passenger shock at compensation for flight luggage theft

AN airline passenger who arrived at Shanghai from New York to find items worth 30,000 yuan (US$4,967) had been stolen from his luggage will receive just US$30 per kilogram for the losses.

The traveler, surnamed Gao, was one of three passengers on the same China Eastern Airlines flight on Saturday who reported thefts from their luggage.

Gao told the media yesterday that on reaching his hotel in Shanghai, he discovered that his luggage had been forced open and designer clothes and shoes he had bought in the United States as gifts were missing.

“I found four pairs of shoes, three scarves and other items from brands including Burberry and Ferragamo were gone,” Gao said.

“Together, they were worth about 30,000 yuan.”

A woman surnamed Hu on the same flight also found her luggage had been opened and expensive cosmetics stolen, while her traveling companion, surnamed Xu, said some of her belongings were also missing.

China Eastern told Gao that as he called police after leaving the airport he couldn’t prove when his property went missing, but that they would still help him, he told thepaper.cn.

“Most passengers don’t check their luggage at the airport,” Gao said.

The Shanghai-based carrier has agreed to compensate victims for US$30 per kilogram according to “international civil aviation convention” for the missing luggage on international flights, the report said.

However, local lawyer Wu Dong said the carrier should take main responsibility as it had a contract with passengers that it would ensure the safety of their lives and luggage.

China Eastern has yet to officially comment.

Police are still investigating.
