Over 600 SMS sent to traffic violators a day after it is introduced

POLICE said a new instant messaging system that informs drivers of their traffic offenses had sent out 647 text messages since Monday, the first day it was put into use.

The offenses were caught by 600 surveillance cameras put up around the city.

A man surnamed Wang, who was driving on the bus-only lane at the intersection of Shangnan Road and Shangbo Road in Pudong once on Monday evening and again today morning, confirmed that he received messages but did not read them till he got summons from the police today.

“I think it’s a good service. It will help me to mend my driving habits,” he said.

Another man whose car was registered under the name of a company was caught illegally changing lanes on Monday. He told police that he received the message but he wasn’t the driver of the car when the alleged offense occurred.

Police said yesterday that 212 messages were sent out to drivers who illegally changed lanes; 194 were sent to those who violated elevated road bans; 172 warned about driving on bus-only lanes while 65 others warned about speeding.
