Outdoor activities highlight of arts fest

CURTAINS will go up on the Shanghai International Arts Festival on Friday with more than 40 programs to be staged at the theaters and 600 other activities planned for outdoor spots in the city.

The festival runs until November 16.

The festival, which was first held in 1999, has been presenting works from both home and abroad.

Some of the big names earmarked for this year’s festival include Dresden Symphony Orchestra and WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne from Germany, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra from Britain, Eifman Ballet from Russia and Israeli violinist Itzak Perlman.

As part of the festival’s “Art Space Series,” the 17 district-level governments and county are allowing free access to the public for the outdoor performances.

With shopping malls, plazas, parks, central greeneries and university campuses turned into stages, an estimated 4 million people are expected to watch the performances.

“We hope that the festival can serve as a platform for good programs from which the ordinary citizens can benefit,” said Liu Wenguo, the artistic director of the festival.

He said the “Art Space Series” serves that purpose.

“Most of the audiences who make the trip to the theaters are those who have been following and appreciating art for years.

“Enriching the programs alone won’t help much in broadening our audiences. Giving access to more ordinary people to events can help the general folk in appreciating art,” Liu said.

Themes have been set for the festival for the first time. They include commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Anti-Fascist War, and “The Belt and Road” (the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road).

The organizers denied that the themes were limiting the scope of the programs.

“It is still a comprehensive one with quality as the only standard, but we consider it necessary to include some contemporary features,” said Wang Jun, president of the Center for Shanghai International Arts Festival.
