‘Oriental Broadway’ in Jing’an

JING’AN District will build China’s first “immersive theater” where audience can involve into scenes and actions.

The district government also said that it will renovate two old theaters to become the “Oriental Broadway.”

The new theater at 1013 Beijing Road W. along with the Majestic and Yihai theaters will become the cultural center for Chinese operas and stage performances.

It will be on par with New York’s Broadway and London’s West District, the district government said after signing an agreement with SMG Group.

The “immersive theater” will be built inside an old building that housed the offices of a local power company.

The audience can get involved into the scene, and even push the plots of the play forward, said Sun Jianping, Party chief of the district. The audience will be ushered from one place to another, or they can explore the space on their own.

The theater will operate round-the- clock. It will stage performances at night and serve as stores, exhibition halls and restaurants during the day. After midnight, it will become a pub.

The Majestic Theater on Jiangning Road has been undergoing major renovations and will be completed by the end of the year, Sun said. It will be turned into a high-end theater for musical plays.
