No happy holiday for 500 criminals
MORE than 500 people linked to 325 criminal cases were prosecuted recently as part of the city’s annual administrative cleanup ahead of the National Day holiday, the Shanghai People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
The majority of cases, 36 percent, involved various forms of theft, while 22 percent concerned people “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” in public, at places like chess clubs and restaurants, prosecutors said.
About 10 percent of the cases involved prosecutions for interfering with the work of law enforcement officials, resisting arrest, or assaulting (including biting) a police officer.
China’s Ministry of Public Security said earlier this year that the number of police officers injured in the line duty has been rising steadily over the past five years.
During last year’s annual purge, prosecutors charged 423 people in 317 cases.
