Missing local teen found out of town, claiming she fell for telecom scam

A local 12th-grader who went missing on Tuesday afternoon was found in another city on Wednesday and claimed she fell victim to a phone scam, police said on Thursday.

The girl’s parents reported her missing to the police after they received a call on Tuesday evening from a stranger who claimed that the girl was in his hands and asked for 500,000 yuan (US$75,000) as ransom.

The 18-year-old girl, surnamed Lu, told the police that she was duped by a call on Tuesday morning.
The scammer allegedly claimed to be from a mail delivery company and told her that her family was under threats from gangsters because the Customs found three fake identity cards in a mail she sent to Macau.

Then a “police officer surnamed Ma from Chongming” called her and asked her to immediately leave for a safe place while making her reveal her parents’ names and contact information.

Under the guidance of the scammers, Lu sold her mobile phone and bought a new one with 150 yuan before setting out in a taxi for Nantong city in Jiangsu Province and after sleeping over there in a hotel going further north for Lianyungang city in the same province where she was eventually found by the police.

City’s recently established police unit to monitor telecom frauds said it detected the first suspicious calls to Lu on Tuesday morning and warned her parents about them after failed attempts to contact the girl.
