Missing deaf woman reunited with family

A 31-year-old deaf woman who went missing nine years ago in a Pudong village was reunited with her parents in Shanghai yesterday, thanks to local police who never gave up looking for her.

The woman, Xiong Juanfei, was reported missing in September 2007 by a man surnamed Chen who claimed to be her distant cousin.

Chen allegedly told police at the time that Xiong had disappeared after leaving the dormitory of the shoe factory where she worked in Zhounan village in Zhoupu Town.

But police couldn’t even determine the identity of Xiong at that time because Chen didn’t know her full name, nor could the police get in touch with her parents.

Tang Weidong, the policeman in charge of the case at that time, recalled that he heard the next year that an elderly man surnamed Xiong came looking for his daughter at the shoe factory, but he did not have a chance to speak with him.

By 2012, when Wang Guoqiang, another policeman, was working on the case, it was known that the missing woman was from southwest China’s Guizhou Province and that her parents were working in south China’s Guangdong Province.

Wang said he never considered giving up on the case because he heard from police in Guizhou in 2014 that Xiong’s parents were still looking for her.

In 2015, Wang Jiarong became the third policeman to work on the case, and in June this year, he heard from police in Guizhou that Xiong’s father, Xiong Wenwei, had returned to his hometown but had left his contact information.

A blood sample from the father was sent to Shanghai and police soon found a match with a sample from a woman who was staying at a social relief station in Jiangsu Province.

It turned out to be Xiong Juanfei.

At a tearful reunion yesterday, Xiong’s parents expressed their deep gratitude to the police officers who made it possible.
