Members angry at finding their King Sport gym in Putuo closed

AUTHORITIES are investigating the sudden closure of a King Sport gym in Putuo District after nearly 1,000 members were left in the lurch with nearly 1 million yuan (US$147,060) left on their membership cards unreturned.

The gym’s doors on Gulang Road remained locked yesterday, and no staff were available for comment.

A member surnamed Zhang said he had spent 8,000 yuan buying a membership card last year that ran until 2019, the Shanghai Morning Post reported.

“I was shocked to find that the gym closed,” he said, adding he had only used his card for a few months.

A woman surnamed Ren paid 2,000 yuan to the gym’s fitness director surnamed Wang to use the gym’s pool. “I kept dialing Wang’s mobile phone, but she did not pick up the phone and I was blocked in her WeChat,” Ren said.

The property management company that looks after the gym’s building said it was owed about 2 million yuan in rent, the report said.

The Putuo District Market Supervision and Management Bureau said it was investigating the incident.

The gym had been put on an “abnormal operation list” and would face restrictions in obtaining bank loans and government project bidding, the bureau told Shanghai Daily.

In a separate case, an early education institution in Hongkou District has closed, leaving dozens of parents owed nearly 1 million yuan in unreturned membership cards, the Shanghai Morning Post reported.

A woman surnamed Li living in the district said she had spent nearly 20,000 yuan last June on buying a membership card at a KariBaby outlet inside One Prime Plaza on Sichuan Rd N.

However, the third floor of the shopping plaza where the outlet was located posted a notice last October stating all business on the floor was suspended.

KariBaby and several other businesses on the floor all closed as a result. Li had more than 10,000 yuan membership fees left on her card.

She had unsuccessfully sought a refund because other KariBaby outlets were too far from her home.

The KariBaby outlet said it was closed by the operator of One Prime Plaza last October despite its contract with the plaza having four more years to run.

It said it would file a lawsuit against the plaza and promised to refund members after the lawsuit was resolved.
