Man who stole from store held

A JOBLESS migrant who robbed a local supermarket in Zhabei District and decamped with goods worth more than 200,000 yuan (US$32,000) — along with a safe — was caught at a construction site, local police said yesterday.

The 31-year-old man, surnamed Jiang, did not have money to go home for the Spring Festival. So early on February 9, Jiang decided to break into a supermarket near Changzhong Road.

After failing in his attempts to break open the lock with a crowbar, Jiang just kept barging on to the door at “sprint speed” couple of times and eventually managed to break down the door.

It could have been straight out of action movies.

Jiang again used the crowbar to rip open the cash counter and stole 800 yuan from it. He then went on to steal goods, among them 75 cartons of cigarettes worth more than 30,000 yuan and some non-alcoholic drinks.

Unable to open the safe, Jiang thought it wise to walk away with the cumbersome safe on his shoulders and hailed a taxi down after his heist.

After selling the cigarettes and with the stolen cash Jiang bought a bullet train ticket. He bought the most expensive seat but his last getaway did not happen.

Police tracked him down from surveillance cameras to a construction site in Putuo District.

Police recovered most of the stolen goods, including the safe containing 140,000-yuan cash and 10,000-yuan worth of gift cards, which Jiang was unable to open.
