Man held for assaults on women joggers

A MAN has been detained on suspicion of molesting women joggers at a residential complex in the Pudong New Area, police said yesterday.

The alleged attacker, surnamed Shen, lives in the complex and was taken in for custody after several women complained of being assaulted.

One woman, surnamed Zhu, said she was attacked about 9:50pm on September 4, Shanghai Morning Post reported.

She said a man pushed her to the ground and fondled her breasts. Although she was stunned at first, she managed to scream for help and her assailant fled the scene, the report said.

When Zhu told the property management company what had happened, she discovered that another woman had complained of being attacked just 20 minutes earlier.

The pair went to the local police station to report the crimes. After taking down a physical description of the alleged attacker, police studied footage from surveillance cameras in the complex and identified Shen as their prime suspect, the report said.

In custody, Shen told police he was separated from his wife, and allegedly admitted to molesting more than 10 women, the report said.

Police urged other women who have been molested in similar circumstances to come forward.

For busy office workers, running at night is considered a good way to keep fit and stay in shape. But women are urged to take care, especially when running alone.

Huang Shan, a 27-year-old office worker, told Shanghai Daily that she has been running at night for about a year.

“It’s a good way to relax after a busy day at work. But I always run between 7:30pm and 9:30pm, when there are lots of people around.”

Liu Taoying, who works for a media company, said she likes to run at a nearby university track.

“Lots of local people run and walk there and that makes me feel safe,” she said.

Huang also warned people against listening to music via headphones while they are running.

“I don’t recommend wearing earpieces,” she said. “I like to have at least one ear open at all times so that I can hear everything that’s going on around me.”
