Man dies of brain stem hemorrhage while watching World Cup

A 39-YEAR-OLD local football fan died of a brain stem hemorrhage while watching a World Cup match at home.

The patient, surnamed Zhou, was sent to Shanghai No. 10 People's Hospital at 3am on Sunday, after suffering a stroke caused by the hemorrhage. He was pronounced dead by the hospital at 9pm Sunday. According to Gao Liang, director of the hospital's neurosurgery department, the patient had a history of high blood pressure. His blood pressure was measured at over 200 on arrival at the hospital.

According to his relatives, Zhou is a veteran football fan, and had already stayed up for two nights for the games. He was sitting on a sofa at home when he suddenly fell down.

Shanghai's hospitals reported an increased number of emergency cases over the weekend. Some are football fans who stayed up late or sacrificed sleep to watch World Cup matches.

According to a physician with the emergency department of Shanghai Huashan Hospital, the number of patients there increased by half over the weekend. Some 30 to 40 percent of them showed symptoms like respiratory or alimentary canal diseases, which can be caused by irregular eating and sleeping times.
