Man arrested for defrauding air hostesses over 2m yuan by claiming to be pilot

A 31-year-old man in suburban Shanghai has been arrested for allegedly defrauding air hostesses over 2 million yuan (US$300,000) by claiming to be a pilot, police said on Saturday.

The suspect surnamed Han who lives in Qingpu District allegedly hooked up the victims via a car-pooling software on the way to Hongqiao International Airport.

Han claimed to be pilot from a wealthy family and have millions of yuan in deposit, and invited the air hostesses to visit his home in a high-end residential complex, police said.

Once in a relationship, he borrowed money from the ladies on numerous excuses and never returned the money.

One of the victims, a woman surnamed Dong who reported suspicion of Han’s intention to the police, said she was persuaded to loan 600,000 yuan from the bank for him.

Han, who once worked as an air attendant for two years, allegedly owned up to the allegation and said he was seeking money to cover his gambling debt.
