Losing gambler runs amok
A MAN who tried to set fire to a games room before stabbing an employee, hijacking a taxi and crashing it, has been charged with arson, intentional injury and dangerous driving, Hongkou District prosecutors said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Wang, 30, began his rampage on May 6 last year after losing nearly 20,000 yuan (US$3,250) gambling at the games room. When he asked for 5,000 yuan back, the proprietor gave him 2,500 yuan and told him to leave.
Angry at losing so much money, Wang, who also suffers from depression, returned to the room armed with a knife and a bowl of oil, which he poured over the gaming tables.
When he attempted to set it alight, a clerk ran to stop him. Wang stabbed him and left the room.
Outside, he hijacked a taxi and drove it at high speed before crashing into another cab and a cyclist.
Wang was trapped inside the stolen vehicle and soon after was taken into police custody.
A court will now decide if Wang should be sent to prison or to a mental hospital, prosecutors said.
