Laundry boss keeps tally of lost items

THE owner of a laundry in Anting Town told Shanghai Daily yesterday that over the past 15 years he has found and returned an estimated 400,000 yuan (US$64,000) worth of cash and other items left in the pockets of the clothing he washes.

Zhang Xuefeng, 45, who owns Yanping Laundry on West Fukang Road, said he has always kept a tally of the things he finds.

From bank cards to watches, cigarettes to USB flash drives, he said he has seen it all.

Since 2013, he has found about 10,000 yuan in cash alone, he said.

“People are often in too much of a hurry to check their pockets when they drop off their laundry,” he said.

One woman even left her wedding ring in her coat pocket, he said.

“We didn’t know how much it was worth,” he said.

On another occasion, Zhang was delighted to reunite a woman with a purse containing 2,900 yuan she had left in a pocket.

Zhang said he got the idea to keep a tally from Liu Juntang, who owns a laundry on Moyu Road, also in Anting.

Liu has had his business for more than 20 years and told Shanghai Daily that in that time he has returned at least 200,000 yuan worth of lost items.

Yanping customer Wu Juying said she has used the laundry since it opened because she trusts the staff.

“Several of my friends have left money in clothes and it’s always been returned,” she said.

Zhang and Liu said they have been offered rewards over the years, but always decline them.

“If something belongs to another person, it’s not yours,” Liu said.
