Imported children’s clothing fails test

SHIPMENTS of brand-name imported children’s clothing have been rejected by the authorities because they are substandard, officials said yesterday.
H&M, Armani Junior, Next and Polo Ralph Lauren were among the top brands that were deemed to be substandard by officials and either destroyed or returned by the city’s entry-exit authorities between January and May 15.
They failed due to poor color fastness, pH index, formaldehyde or fiber content, according to the Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
More than 14,000 pieces of H&M clothing for children were destroyed or returned by the bureau.
Among them, 1,008 cotton scarves for infants imported from Bangladesh were destroyed because they contained carcinogenic formaldehyde.
A batch of 20 knitted T-shirts from Polo Ralph Lauren imported from Vietnam were destroyed or returned for the same reason.
Excessive exposure to formaldehyde can lead to headaches, dermatitis, respiratory disease, eczema, malignant tumors and leukemia.
Nearly 5,000 H&M children’s T-shirts and trousers imported from Turkey and Pakistan were destroyed due to poor color fastness.
Clothes with poor color fastness can bleed dye onto the skin, which can be harmful, officials said.
