Hospital building damaged by fire

A FIRE broke out yesterday at the No. 411 Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army on Sichuan Road N., the city’s fire department said.

The 20-story ward building, which is currently undergoing renovation, caught light about 11:50am when a fire started on the scaffolding surrounding it.

The building was empty at the time of the incident, but a neighboring apartment building was evacuated as a precaution, officials said.

Witnesses said the upper floors of the ward building were soon engulfed in flames and black smoke.

About 20 firefighters arrived on the scene about 11:55am and the fire was brought under control 45 minutes later. There were no casualties.

The hospital said the ward building was not currently in use, but declined to comment further.

According to eastday.com, residents of the Fangzhou apartment block, which stands just a few meters from the hospital building, were evacuated soon after the fire started.

Police temporarily cordoned off Sichuan Road N., but traffic resumed soon after the fire was extinguished. Its cause is under investigation.

Meanwhile, more than 200 firefighters were dispatched to tackle a fire at a luggage factory in Songjiang District yesterday.

Teams spent an hour tackling the blaze, which engulfed more than 4,000 square meters of the building.

Witnesses said that prior to the blaze, which started about noon, they saw people burning straw in a field close to the factory.

Some people are helping police with their inquiries.

No casualties were reported in the fire, but the cost of the damage is being calculated.
