Hongkou shuts 900 businesses
MORE than 900 illegal businesses have been shut in a crackdown in Hongkou District so far this year, a local government official said yesterday.
The businesses, including saunas, massage parlors and hair salons, were either unlicensed, polluting the environment or posed fire risks, the official with Hongkou’s market supervision bureau said.
However, some 179 unlicensed business operators who posed no pollution or safety risks had been helped to obtain licenses since January, he said.
During the crackdown, 2,000 legal businesses were told to make improvements or eliminate safety problems.
Business operators closed down because they were illegal are being offered help to open legal businesses elsewhere, the official said.
For those struggling to make ends meet after the crackdown, the district is providing food and accommodation.
Hongkou aims to remove all illegal business operations by the end of the year.
The downtown area is one of the city’s most densely populated and unlicensed catering and illegal street stores were once rampant.
About 3,900 illegal businesses were shut down in Hongkou last year.
