High-tech traffic cameras focus on three offenses at road ramps
IN an effort to catch more law-breaking drivers, police yesterday introduced new digital cameras that are programmed to specifically capture three types of traffic offenses at elevated road ramps.
The cameras, which capture only illegal parking, lane changing or reversing, have been installed at 10 spots on the Inner Ring Road, the Middle Ring Road, the Outer Ring Road and the Huaxia Elevated Road, where a high number of offenses are committed.
“Those are the most common and dangerous traffic offenses at the ramps, which we hope to deter with the new cameras,” said Pudong Police spokesman Tang Junwei.
The new cameras are expected to take some of the pressure off the understaffed police department and improve safety for officers by reducing their exposure to the dangers of enforcing the law on busy elevated roads, he added.
Over 3,500 digital cameras are working for the police in all parts of the city, but a typical camera is programmed to capture only one kind of offense, such as running a red light, speeding and illegal lane changing.
The new multi-offense camera is a licensed product that was commissioned by the police. At each spot, a digital screen displays the plate numbers of cars involved in the offenses captured by the camera in real time, as well as the type of infraction committed.
Police revealed that the camera can theoretically capture an offense at least 150 meters away.
Jin Jun, an officer with Pudong traffic police, said they will take action against drivers after analyzing video evidence from the cameras.
“Any car found to violate certain traffic rules will be identified right away,” he explained.
Illegal parking in vehicle lanes costs a driver 200 yuan (US$31) and six demerits on their license, while illegal parking within channelizing lines costs 200 yuan and three demerits. Illegal lane changing costs 200 yuan and three demerits, and illegal reversing on an expressway costs 200 yuan and 12 demerits, for which a driver will have their license suspended until they pass a written test on traffic rules.
Meanwhile, Yangpu District has been equipping its traffic police officers with special video cameras on their motorcycles to record violations. The camera, which can capture images up to 20 meters away, is capable of instant playback to provide video evidence on the spot.
