Girl, 6, father severely burnt after BBQ blaze engulfs them
A SIX-YEAR-OLD girl and her father were seriously burnt while trying to make barbecue at the Huajing Park in Minhang District.
The family reached the park around noon on Saturday to make barbecue after being turned away from several other parks, Shanghai Television reported yesterday.
The unidentified father, 32, laid out a plastic barrel filled with alcohol to fan the fire next to the charcoal oven. But the barrel exploded all of a sudden. The child’s mother Wang Xiaoling said the bucket was probably placed too close to the oven, and the sparks struck the barrel.
“My daughter was standing next to the oven and it looked like she was covered in ashes within a minute as her body was in flames. My husband’s situation was the same,” Wang said.
She said the family was hungry when they arrived at the park so her husband started grilling food in a hurry. The father took off his clothes to extinguish the fire on his daughter, but it did not help much.
Several other people at the park tried to help them. A driver who was passing by brought a fire extinguisher from the car and helped extinguish the fire.
The girl suffered third-degree burns, while the father was less severe, according to Ruijin Hospital where they are in the Intensive Care Unit.
